Our menu looks somewhat different from that but gravy is number one for me. The bird is injected with a sherry-butter mixture before roasting and the resulting juices make for a very tasty sauce.
I like yams fine, but since we are confessing, I rather have sweet potatoes.
my sister makes a yams casserole for Thanksgiving which has converted many former yams haters. no marshmallows. just bake the yams, scoop the flesh into a bowl, add a ton of butter, bourbon, brown sugar and pecans*. . put into a baking dish and heat through
* I dont' know the actual amounts, but if anyone is interested I can find out.
Oh, yes! The recipe for marshmallow yams is sitting out here already, but bourbon, brown sugar and pecans sounds like a wonderfully southern way to go for some variety.
The tricks are all Nancy's - she brines the bird for 24 hours before we cook it! And she's got the herbs and fruit all figured out! I just drop it in the fryer and cook till it's done!
I brine in kosher salt, lemon, garlic, parsley and peppercorns. Brine for 48 hours. Bring turkey to room temperature and rub with a mixture of kosher salt, coarse ground pepper and garlic powder.
Drop in the oil and the rest is up to Dan....he is the frymaster!
Alright, I haven't been on this site for AGES! However, this vote sparked an interest in me, especially since I've been out of the states for the past three (including this one) thanksgivings. My husband and I would have to skip the listed items above (except the one directly before mine) and go with Vegetable Medley. Just yesterday I received a care package box from my mother in law with a recipe and all the American based ingredients- I guess it's an offering that I'm accepted to the family! And that I better keep her son happy! : )
The turkey, dressing, mashed potato and cranberry sauce sandwich on sourdough bread the next day!! That's why I stay home and cook on Thanksgiving...I love the leftovers. "BYOT" on my invitations...."Bring Your Own Tupperware!!"
Good garlic potatoes. And good (read: non-soggy) vegetables of almost any variety. And lots of red wine -- Cab, Zin, or even Merlot are traditional, but what ever floats your boat.

Stuffing. Garlic mash potatoes. Yummy!!!
Well, we wrap the turkey like peking duck so that's deeelish... but then mashed potatoes! And stuffing!
... I don't have a good opinion. I vote 3 things.
Precisely, a basic bread stuffing and "tasting" the stuffing before it gets cooked.
Darn it. Now I'm hungry.
