I haven't done one of these 80's Music Flashback posts in a very long time, but this song came up today in the shuffle and it made me want to see the video.
I'm going to my 25th college reunion this summer and have volunteered to reprieve my former role as a DJ at KRLX campus radio. I had the most eclectic play list imaginable on my Friday night 10 pm to midnight show: Hall & Oates, Rick James, Gordon Lightfoot, the Replacements, Prince, Billy Idol, Cat Stevens, the Gap Band, Elvis Costello, Diana Ross & the Supreme's, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, the Time, Steve Miller, Patrice Rushun...
Oh my, the mix was a mess on paper, but I think it worked on the air. But who knows, that was 1980-81 and no one gave a shit about a "format". Ronald Reagan had been elected President my freshman year and we kids at the college where Paul Wellstone was a ramble-rousing political science professor, just wanted to listen to some good music on a Friday night out there in the corn fields of Northfield Minnesota. It didn't matter one bit that the songs or the artists didn't really fit together and that only a handful of people were listening.
I've not been to one of the reunions yet, but I imagine I'll find that some of us still hold on to that heart of glass.
Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
In between
What I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine
Love is so confusing there's no peace of mind
If I fear I'm losing you it's just no good
You teasing like you do
Lost inside
Adorable illusion and I cannot hide
I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside
We could've made it cruising, yeah
Yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light
Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out I had a heart of glass
Soon turned out to be a pain in the ass
Seemed like the real thing only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

I haven't made a post for 80's Music Friday in ages, but nosing around on YouTube tonight I found this live performance from the ever brilliant Talking Heads.
Watch it and try not to dance around the room.
I thought I had already added Sweet Love" to 80's Music Friday before now, but I searched my 80's archive and didn't see it. I heard Anita Baker interviewed on the radio a week or so ago and was reminded of what a wonderful voice she has. Isn't this song just dripping with love?
I'm giving you two versions, the original video and a smoking hot live performance. There are few singers today who can come close to Anita Baker. This is just one of those classics that, in my mind at least, isn't confined to any decade; it's just good.
Sweet Love
(Anita Baker, Louis A. Johnson & Gary Bias)
With all my heart I love you baby
Stay with me and you will see
My arms will hold you, baby
Never leave, 'cause I believe
[Chorus:]
I'm in love, sweet love
Hear me calling out your name, I feel no shame
I'm in love, sweet love
Don't you ever go away, it'll always be this way
Oh, your heart has called me closer to you
I will be all that you need
Just trust in what we're feeling
Never leave 'cause baby, I believe
[Chorus]
No stronger love in this world
Oh, baby no, you're my man, I'm your girl
I'll never go, wait and see, can't be wrong
Don't you know this is where you belong
Sweet, sweet and lovely baby
Stay right here, never fear
I will be all that you need
Never leave, 'cause baby, I believe
[Chorus]
I really do have to get up early tomorrow morning to take AB to a photography club shoot. So instead of posting to another 80's music Friday (it's been a little awhile since I have), I should be going to bed, but I do loves me some Gap Band!
Because I can't possibly choose just one selection when I'm digging around YouTube for classic 80's fare, here's the Whispers and Animotion too. Oh these take me back. The Whispers were great, weren't they?
I think I mioght need to go out somewhere and go dancing, whatcha say?
I've always had a big crush on Daryl Hall ever since I was in junior high school and I got to go a concert on a press pass, even going backstage to interview and photograph them for a local paper. (Those are some photographs I should scan and post someday with the story of my Hall & Oates teenage musical crushes.)
This is a live performance I found on YouTube that shows how Daryl's voice is just as smooth in person as it was on the records.
While not my all time favorite Hall & Oates hit, I like nearly every track they've ever recorded, especially the older songs, but I thought "Kiss On My List" was an appropriate selection for today. Enjoy!
Kiss On My List - Daryl Hall & John OatesMy friends wonder why I call you all of the time
What can I say
I don't feel the need to give such secrets away
You think maybe I need help, no, I know that I'm right
I'm just better off not listening to friends' adviceWhen they insist on knowing my bliss
I tell them this
When they want to know what the reason is
I only smile when I lie, then I tell them whyCHORUS:
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
Because your kiss is on my list of the best things in life
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
(Because your kiss) your kiss I can't resist
Because your kiss is what I miss when I turn out the lightI go crazy wondering what there is to really see
Did the night just take up your time, 'cause it means more to me
Sometimes I forget what I'm doing, I don't forget what I want
Regret what I've done, regret you? I couldn't go onAnd if you insist on knowing my bliss
I'll tell you this
If you want to know what the reason is
I'll only smile when I lie, then I'll tell you thisCHORUS
The audio is no longer broken on my laptop, so I'm back to posting for 80's Music Friday. I'm feeling a little nostalgic for Minneapolis, so I'm flashing all the way back to high school to remember dancing in Loring Park, or Uncle Sam's (later to become, just Sam's and then the legendary First Avenue) to the sounds of The Replacements, The Suburbs and Sussman Lawrence.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes, calls, IMs, tweets and various other ways of letting me know you care. I'm a wee bit better today thanks to anti-dizziness medication, but it's still hard to keep my eyes open and not feel like I'm just off an amusement park ride. The meds for the spinning make me real groggy, so if you see me online or talk to me on the phone, know that I'm only about at about 30% brain capacity and either just waking up from a nap or about to fall asleep mid-sentence.
Diagnosis: positional vertigo. It sounds almost fun, but it's not. It's caused by something whacky in the inner ear, or so they think. But it's one of those mystery ailments they don't really know much about, what causes it or what makes it better.
I experienced this once 6 yrs ago just as bad. I was in Phoenix at a conference for work and it came on as suddenly just like this time. The only difference is that Tuesday night I was driving down the highway at 70 m.p.h. when it hit me. I had to go the hospital that time too because I wasn't able to stand up without spinning and barfing.
Think about the worst case of the drunked bed spins you can imagine and then imagine you haven't drank and it doesn't stop.
I have to close my eyes now, looking at the screen don't help matters any. Just wanted you all to know that I'm OK and hope (need) to be upright and better real soon.
I'm jumping the gun on 80's Music Friday because it's so obvious. Enjoy!
Oh yeah.
It's been one of those holiday weeks where it doesn't feel like the day that it actually is. Hey, is today Friday? No, it's Tuesday.
But Friday has actually arrived and on Vox you know what that means...it's 80's Music Friday.
Wave your hands in the air like you don't care!
Check out the red "piece" of armor on this guy...wha-wha-whaat?! We don't have no time for the psychological romance. Indeed we don't! What does he think, someone's going to kick him in the nuts? Or perhaps it's more like a gibbon's bottom calling potential mates over by showing off the goods? In any case, it makes me blush and I have to look away.
But I love this song anyway and hope this little 80's flashback sends you off into the weekend with your tail feathers shaking. Word up!
As an added bit of 80's nostalgia, this video also features a very young and wild eyed LeVar Burton.
Some say I talk too much, well perhaps it's true. Perhaps.
In tribute to all of us who are somewhat verbose, and to mirror Karen's excellent selection for today as well, I give you my pick for this week's 80's Music Friday.
Well did I tell you before
When I was up
Anxiety was bringing me down
I'm tired of listening to you
Talking in rhymes
Twisting round to think
You're straight down the lineAll you do to me is talk talk
Talk Talk
Talk Talk
All you do to me is talk talk
Talk Talk
Talk Talk
All you do to me is talk talkIf every sign that I see is to complete
Then I'm a fool in your game
And all you want to do
Is tell me your lies
Won't you show the other side
You're just wasting my timeAll you do to me is talk talk
Talk Talk
Talk Talk
All you do to me is talk talk
Talk Talk
Talk Talk
All you do to me is talk talkWhen every choice that I make is yours
Keep telling me what's right and what's wrong
Don't you ever stop to think about me
I'm not that blind to see
That you've been cheating on meYou're laughing at me when I'm up
I see you when you're crying for me
When I'm down
I see you when you're laughing for me
When I'm up
I see you when you're crying for meAll you do to me is talk talk
Talk Talk
Talk Talk
All you do to me is talk talk
Talk Talk
