I haven't done one of these 80's Music Flashback posts in a very long time, but this song came up today in the shuffle and it made me want to see the video.
I'm going to my 25th college reunion this summer and have volunteered to reprieve my former role as a DJ at KRLX campus radio. I had the most eclectic play list imaginable on my Friday night 10 pm to midnight show: Hall & Oates, Rick James, Gordon Lightfoot, the Replacements, Prince, Billy Idol, Cat Stevens, the Gap Band, Elvis Costello, Diana Ross & the Supreme's, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, the Time, Steve Miller, Patrice Rushun...
Oh my, the mix was a mess on paper, but I think it worked on the air. But who knows, that was 1980-81 and no one gave a shit about a "format". Ronald Reagan had been elected President my freshman year and we kids at the college where Paul Wellstone was a ramble-rousing political science professor, just wanted to listen to some good music on a Friday night out there in the corn fields of Northfield Minnesota. It didn't matter one bit that the songs or the artists didn't really fit together and that only a handful of people were listening.
I've not been to one of the reunions yet, but I imagine I'll find that some of us still hold on to that heart of glass.
Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
In between
What I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine
Love is so confusing there's no peace of mind
If I fear I'm losing you it's just no good
You teasing like you do
Lost inside
Adorable illusion and I cannot hide
I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside
We could've made it cruising, yeah
Yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light
Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out I had a heart of glass
Soon turned out to be a pain in the ass
Seemed like the real thing only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
.
I really do have to get up early tomorrow morning to take AB to a photography club shoot. So instead of posting to another 80's music Friday (it's been a little awhile since I have), I should be going to bed, but I do loves me some Gap Band!
Because I can't possibly choose just one selection when I'm digging around YouTube for classic 80's fare, here's the Whispers and Animotion too. Oh these take me back. The Whispers were great, weren't they?
I think I mioght need to go out somewhere and go dancing, whatcha say?
The audio is no longer broken on my laptop, so I'm back to posting for 80's Music Friday. I'm feeling a little nostalgic for Minneapolis, so I'm flashing all the way back to high school to remember dancing in Loring Park, or Uncle Sam's (later to become, just Sam's and then the legendary First Avenue) to the sounds of The Replacements, The Suburbs and Sussman Lawrence.
I'll give you a break from my recent 80's Music disco, dance, funkiness and venture back into my other favorite 80's popular space: New Wave. You remember New Wave right? Gary Neuman, Soft Cell, The English Beat, the B-52s, Duran Duran.
Here's a pair of New Wave Classics. I read on Wikipedia that in Europe, they were known as Yazoo, but I remember them as Yaz. Do you?
What I also remember, in addition to the non-stop synthpop beats, was Alison Moyet's amazing husky voice -- so sexy. Flashback to the 80's party people.
As you can probably detect by my recent choices for 80's Music Fridays, I was am partial to what was known as "The Minneapolis Sound" (Prince, The Time, Alexander O'Neal, Jesse Johnson) and I take a liking to disco, dance, R&B and soulful ballads and blues no matter what city they're from.
Sure, I loved the TomTom Club, Divo, Madonna, the Police , the Go-Go's, the Eurythmics and the rest, but throw down a funky beat and this girl from Funkytown just couldn't resist.
Enjoy three of my favorites from back in the day. Tell me you don't just wanna belt this first one out really loud? If you do, I guarantee it will make you feel good all over.
And if you can just sit there and not want to move your hips across a dance floor with Miss Nenah Cherry or Lipps Inc, I don't know what's wrong with you. You just must not have the funk in ya sister or brother!
I love 80's Music an this was one of my favorites from "back in the day". And it seems a fitting title to play and share on Vox, where we all "got to be real".
Cheryl as seen on Soul Train. Oh yeah!
I heard this on the radio today and just knew what my 80's Music Friday posting was going to be: Cherelle's "Saturday Love", featuring Minneapolis' own Alexander O'Neal.
Maybe one day I'll post the story of the after-hours club I went to in Saint Paul in Alexander O'Neal's limo. I doubt it though.
And speaking of sampling, Will Smith did more than sample, he basically just copied this song, and I hated his version too. Patrice Rushen's "Forgot Me Nots" is the only version in my book. I couldn't find a video of her performing it, but this is the original song and a cute video of some kid who clearly knows a good dance tune when he hears it.
Party over here! It's 80's Music Friday (according to Abe).
I LOVED the Gap Band...back in the day. Go ahead, play it loud. Dance around...one time...with your bad selves!
