I'm behind on posting food (and other) pictures stored in my camera, so I'll dump a few on you at once.
The first two pictures are some sauteing leeks. The organic farm that delivers produce every other week is apparently being overtaken with them. I have leeks and more leeks and the only thing I know how to make with leeks is a hardy potato leek soup. I've made a basic midwestern one with carrots, an Indian spiced one and this last week I made a basic one but jazzed it up with pear and caraway. All have been yummy, but there's only so much variation on a theme I can muster. If they send me more leeks next week, I'm going to have to start investigating other things to make beside potato-leek soup.
The second set of photos are just some contrasty pictures of the sun coming in the kitchen window on some of the produce. The last delivery included dandelion greens and a recipe for them. Never having cooked the leaves of a yard weed before, I thought I'd give it shot. Ummm.....forget it. These must have been bad ones or something, because I have never tasted anything so bitter. I par boiled the leaves and was going to saute them up in some bacon fat with some onions and other greens, but we tasted them and almost had to use mouth wash to get the bitter taste off our tongues. I tossed them in the compose bin. I hear they are loaded with vitamins and minerals, but yuck, these are not not edible.
These last two pictures are from our trip to Fresno on Monday, where we had a surprisingly good sushi dinner at this little restaurant in a corner of a strip mall. The place was called Waasabi and the rolls were especially good and inventive.
Oh and finally I will add some pretty yellow daffodils that I bought for a measly $5 at Trader Joes last week. I love yellow. It's such a happy, open and welcoming color. Don't you think?
Deb and Aaron came over for brunch today and afterward we saw Pan's Labyrinth. What an amazing movie, in every way: acting, cinematography, special effects, story.
I can't remember the last movie I saw that was this intensely dark and whimsically beautiful. It is a study in contrasts: scary violent evil and heart wrenching tender innocence. I left the theater in something of an altered state - no exaggeration. It's the kind of movie that stays with you. You should see it.
(Note, that this movie is in Spanish with subtitles and is rated R. It's not a fairy tale, but is definately not for the little ones.)
These pictures were from brunch. I like how I laid the blackberries between the kiwi slices. Liked it so much I asked AB to take a picture.
I pulled out the rice cooker, some thawed chicken breasts, a couple of yellow bell peppers and whipped up something yummy for dinner.
I've never made Indian food at home before (aside from microwave papadums, Trader's Joes frozen garlic naan and opening a jar of mango pickle) and I think for a first try I did pretty good. Now to eating it. Looks like there will be plenty of left overs too. This should quell my cravings for Chaat for awhile too!
Last weekend I made pop-overs. They actually popped over, were beautiful and delicious.
This weekend, I had a craving for tabouli and Annabelle had one for chocolate chip cookies. We made both. We got two persimmons in our box of produce from Copay this week. I don't know what to do with them. Any suggestions?
My sister Nancy (who has yet to accept my Vox invitations!) has become quite a good cook. Most importantly, she really enjoys it as a creative outlet and has one of those brains that remembers everything she sees or hears. Just ask her the name of some obscure character on any 1970s television show, or ask her what book it was that I whipped at her head breaking the mirror she was standing in front of curling her hair when we were teenagers sharing the same bedroom.
Anyway, we got to talking a couple of weeks ago about her relatively new-found love of cooking and her vast knowledge base of information that her friends and family tap into for questions like "what's the difference between a lime and a key lime" and I suggested that she needed a blog to put it all down in one easy to share place.
She hasn't actually said that she'll start her own cooking blog yet, but I'm convinced she should. So I told her I'd send her some TypePad and Vox blogs for inspiration. Showing her how easy it is to post my meager kitchen adventures, I also said I'd help her step up either a TypePad or Vox blog as soon as she's ready.
So here's where you, my fellow life bloggers, can help. I sent her an email with a few links (below), but I'd love her to have more inspiration from everyday real people to draw from. So comment below with your favorite "foodie" blogs and I'll make another attempt to get her on Vox to read this post and it's comments.
Thanks to you all for your help.
